A Busy Week Catching Up on Work
Plus: Please share this newsletter with your travel publicist friends/coworkers!
Happy Wednesday, my friends.
Well, it’s been a very annoying 9 days in my world … I’ve been sick with a nasty sinus infection (I haven’t gone to the doctor, so who knows what it even is?), and quite literally was unable to sit at my desk and get any work done last week. And I’m supposed to be in Lodi, California right now on a press trip, but cancelled for obvious reasons. I’m still only operating at about 40%, so I have a ways to go in this recovery process. As you can imagine, I’m painfully behind on deadlines. I haven’t had so much as a sniffle since pre-pandemic, so at least I had a good run, right?!
May I ask a favor of you that’ll take less than a minute of your time and it’s FREE? Now that I’m doing a TON more travel writing (ahhhh, starting to feel so very pre-pandemic in terms of travel assignments, yay!), I’m realizing that I don’t have a deep enough bench of travel-focused PR pros signed up for this newsletter. If you have a publicist friend/coworker who handles travel (destinations, hotels/resorts, cruise lines, tour companies, etc.), would you be so kind as to suggest they sign up? You can just forward this to them or click the link below and send that via email … I’d be so grateful for you to help get the word out. Thank you!
Also, I received several very thoughtful emails last week asking how you should navigate reaching out to journalists during times of national distress. I noticed that many of you held off on pitching, as my inbox was much quieter in the immediate aftermath of last week’s events (and I applaud you for that restraint). Here’s my advice: It’s perfectly OK to respond to calls for pitches (like these newsletters, HARO, social media posts) … we have deadlines to meet and we asked for those pitches. But if you’re cold pitching something that is not timely (which is 90% of pitches, let’s be honest), then it’s wise to wait 48 hours or so. I was a bit shocked by the sex toy pitches I received and requests for embargoes on frivolous matters that arrived the very next day, as they felt so very tone deaf.
One last noteworthy item: Cision's 2022 Global State of the Media Report just came out, and I’d suggest you all give it a read! It answers such questions as: What are the biggest challenges journalists face right now? What do journalists want – and need – from PR pros? How are journalists utilizing social media? What are the best practices for providing multimedia to the media? What are the PR approaches that really get journalists’ attention? It’s good stuff!!
That’s it …. see below for my current editorial needs (more for TripSavvy next week, so stay tuned for that), links to my latest published pieces, and more!
Have a wonderful rest of your week,
Jill
