Let's Talk About: A Real-Life Example of a Brilliant Way to Follow Up on a Pitch

In my Ask Me Anything sessions and my consulting workshops and 1:1s, one of the most-asked questions from publicists is about follow-up etiquette: How long after the initial pitch to follow up, how often to follow up, where to follow up (omg never a phone call, please!) … but nobody ever asks me what to say in a follow-up.
And that’s odd, because this is actually the MOST important part of the follow-up strategy.
Most publicists simply send a message like:
“Circling back on this pitch to gauge your interest in a story!”
“Bringing this to the top of your inbox in case you missed it!”
“Following up! Any coverage opps?”
“Can we get an interview scheduled?”
“I wanted to remind you about … [inserts exact same pitch word for word again]”
But there’s a 95% chance a writer is going to delete those follow-up attempts.
